Motorcyclist dies after police chase in Flint

FLINT (WJRT) - (08/22/14) - A motorcyclist is dead after crashing during a chase with police in Flint.

The Lapeer man was hospitalized after the Thursday night crash, but died early Friday morning.

It happened on Flint's west side near the intersection of Woodbridge Street and Flushing Road.

Police say it started when they tried to pull him over.

"Last night at approximately 10:40, our troops attempted to stop a cyclist for speeding," said Lt. Brian Cole, with the Michigan State Police Flint Post.

Michigan State Police say the trooper turned on lights and sirens, but the motorcyclist didn't stop.

"He ran a stop sign and after a short pursuit he traveled in the northbound lane and hit another car head on," Cole said.

He was listed in critical condition when he got to the hospital. Several hours later, he died.

Relatives tell us the motorcyclist was 31-year-old Samuel W. Jackson.

Lieutenant Cole talked about evidence found by investigators.

"Very close to the crash scene, a firearm was found and a large amount of cash was located," he said.

Michigan Department of Corrections records show Jackson served time in prison on assault and concealed weapons charges. He was discharged in 2012.

At this point, police don't know where Jackson was headed before the chase started.

Cole says troopers are taught how handle these situations.

"Our MSP troops receive specific recruit training in reference [to the] decision to pursue or not in split seconds," Cole said.

They must consider things like pedestrians, traffic conditions and even weather.

In this case, Cole says the trooper made the decision to pursue considering all the factors.

"Our preliminary investigations show that there was little to no traffic and no pedestrian traffic present," he said.

We will be following up with Michigan State Police as their investigation continues.
