HOLLY (WJRT) - (08/24/14) - A veterans memorial was unveiled Sunday at the Great Lakes National Cemetery.

The monument is designed to honor veterans from the Holly area who served in wars dating back to the Revolutionary War. It also has an engraving that states, "Honoring those who answered the call. Lest we forget."

"I get all choked up. Like I said, I was a medic, I was in quite a few fire fights and I've seen a lot of men wounded and died. I can't help but think of them everyday," said Sam Alvarvo, Commander VFW Post 5587.

The monument is on Memory Trail, toward the back of the cemetery. It was made possible through donations from community members, Kroger and The Dryer Funeral Home and Monument Company.
