Michigan coronavirus cases pass 70,000 milestone as July surge continues

LANSING, Mich. (WJRT) - Michigan passed another milestone on Tuesday with more than 70,000 confirmed coronavirus cases.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 584 new cases of coronavirus Tuesday. That pushes the statewide total of confirmed coronavirus cases to 70,306.

The daily statewide number of confirmed coronavirus cases has increased by more than 500 five times in the first half of July after dropping below 200 for several days in mid to late June.

However, the number of deaths attributed to coronavirus in Michigan has been growing at a much slower rate. Only six more coronavirus deaths were reported statewide on Tuesday for a total of 6,081.

Coronavirus testing reached a record of 28,000 on Friday before dropping back below 20,000 every day since. However, the number of positive tests in Michigan topped 4% on Monday -- the highest positive rate since May 28.

Here are totals for Mid-Michigan counties based on Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and local health department figures and the change from Monday:

  • Genesee, 2,341 cases and 264 deaths, which is an increase of 15 cases.
  • Saginaw, 1,365 cases, 122 deaths and 733 patients recovered, which is an increase of 14 cases.
  • Arenac, 34 cases and two deaths, which is no change.
  • Bay, 394 cases, 30 deaths and 326 patients recovered, which is an increase of three cases and six recoveries.
  • Clare, 33 cases and three deaths, which is an increase of two cases.
  • Gladwin, 28 cases and one death, which is no change.
  • Gratiot, 97 cases and 14 deaths, which is no change.
  • Huron, 70 cases and three deaths, which is an increase of two cases.
  • Iosco, 105 cases and 10 deaths, which is no change.
  • Isabella, 139 cases and eight deaths, which is an increase of two cases.
  • Lapeer, 275 cases and 31 deaths, which is an increase of five cases.
  • Midland, 145 cases and nine deaths, which is an increase of five cases.
  • Ogemaw, 33 cases and two deaths, which is no change.
  • Oscoda, 17 cases and one death, which is no change.
  • Roscommon, 30 cases, which is no change.
  • Sanilac, 53 cases and five deaths, which is no change.
  • Shiawassee, 260 cases, 27 deaths and 224 patients recovered, which is an increase of one case.
  • Tuscola, 234 cases and 27 deaths, which is no change.
