MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) - Anyone shopping at Meijer will need to wear a mask or face covering beginning Monday.

The retail giant announced the policy online Friday. It applies both to its 250 supercenters and gas station convenience stores.

Shoppers with medical conditions preventing them from wearing a covering over their nose and mouth will be exempt from the policy.

Michigan has been requiring everyone inside enclosed spaces, such as stores and restaurants, to wear masks or face coverings for several months. Effective last Monday, stores were ordered to refuse service to anyone not complying with the order.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer also requires masks or face coverings for anyone at gatherings where social distancing is not being followed. Violators face a misdemeanor charge and up to a $500 fine.
