LAPEER COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) - A 4-year-old boy died Wednesday just days after he was pulled from a pool in the backyard of his grandparents’ house.

The boy wasn’t breathing when friends found him in the pool on Hadley Road in Elba Township around 9:30 a.m. Monday. Deputies from the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office and Lapeer County EMS crews performed life-saving measures, which helped him regain a pulse on the way to McLaren Lapeer Region hospital.

Police say he was airlifted to the University of Michigan Medical Center, where he died on Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators say the boy was visiting his grandparents with his twin sibling and 28-year-old mother on Monday. He was last seen sleeping around 8:30 a.m., but he apparently got up, walked outside the house and opened an unlocked gate to access the pool.

The sheriff’s office says the near drowning was a tragic accident and they are continuing to investigate.
