LANSING, Mich. (WJRT) - Michigan reported the highest increase in confirmed coronavirus cases in nearly a week on Thursday.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 722 new cases of coronavirus statewide Thursday, increasing the total to 85,429. That is the largest daily increase since Saturday.

Twenty-six more deaths statewide were attributed to the illness Thursday for a total of 6,247. However, 17 of Thursday’s coronavirus deaths came from a routine audit of death records.

State health officials periodically review death certificates to look for confirmed coronavirus patients. If a patient who died wasn’t already listed in coronavirus death totals, they are added after the review.

Coronavirus testing remains at the highest average levels every day. More than 25,000 tests have been completed every day since July 27.

The percentage of positive tests continued its steady decline on Wednesday down to 3.13% after topping 3.8% on July 29.
