Diaper creations by local dentists help raise money and awareness for babies in need

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) - (04/22/19) - Right now, dentists from throughout Genesee County are helping some of their youngest patients, by reaching out to help a cause that's dear to our hearts at ABC12.

All month long "superheroes" will be visiting the offices to help to raise awareness about a silent crisis in our community.

Premier Oral Surgery & Implants created a life-size statue of Wonder Woman out of diapers that now greets their patients each day and that's the whole point!

"People come in and say, 'What's that for, how can we help?' we always tell them you can either bring in diapers or just donate some money and help," explains Amy Paulson of Premier.

It's just one of these amazing creations crafted with love and made entirely out of something the Genesee District Dental Society believes no child should go without.

Five years ago, Dr. Jori Lewis of Werschky & Lewis Family Dentistry learned how many local families were struggling to provide this basic need for their children.

"When I heard about it, I had a 2-month-old at home whose diaper I changed probably 10 times a day," Lewis said. "Hearing stories about a baby sitting in a single diaper all day long broke my heart, I figured I'd have to find a way to help."

The GDDS has been partnering with the Flint Diaper Bank ever since.

"In dentistry, the number one childhood disease is dental decay, something that is preventable, so this was a great opportunity for us, while we raised money and awareness to provide diapers for babies, we also had the opportunity to put an infant toothbrush and and informational flyer inside of the diaper packets that are distributed through the Flint Diaper Bank," shares Dr. Lewis.

The Flint Diaper Bank is a non-profit organization that can buy diapers at cost so they can be donated to families who need them most.

The dentists started a diaper creation competition in 2013 between offices to bring even more attention to the cause.

This year's theme is super heroes, just like the dentists and staff who've been looking out for area babies.

Patients can vote for their favorite diaper creation by using the link included with this story through April 30.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will be announced at the 2019 Diaper Drive scheduled for Friday, May 31 at the ELGA Credit Union on Center Road in Burton.
