15+ homes at Camelot Villas damaged by strong winds in Genesee Township

GENESEE TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (3/14/2019) - The Camelot Villas mobile home community in Genesee Township was one of the most heavily damaged areas in Genesee County during Thursday's storms.

Initial assessments indicate strong straight line winds damaged at least 15 mobile homes, knocked down trees and flung debris all over the park. One vacant mobile home got knocked off its foundation.

Several residents in the park on Genesee Road near Frances Road were displaced and taken to the Genesee United Methodist Church to stay for the night. The park's clubhouse also was open for residents.

"We have roofs ripped completely off two or three different trailers. We got trees twisted. Tops were ripped right off," said Genesee Township Assistant Fire Chief Don Fremd. "There's heavy heavy damage throughout the trailer park here on the northeast side."

He said nobody in the park was injured.

An older couple had to be rescued from their home after their roof flew off. But the park manager said they and the others unable to return home tonight are with family or friends.

Fire crews remained in the park for several hours helping clean up and make the area safe again. Consumers Energy crews also were in the park checking homes after some gas leaks were discovered.

One family, who was allowed to stay their home overnight, said the storm tore off a few pieces of their trailer, but their power was still on.

"I seen the awning go fly," said Dewey Cain. "I just seen it whoosh and I said, 'Get down.' I just jumped out of my chair and got down right where we were."

Michelle Hosner said it felt like a freight train coming through.

"I'm trying the shut the door and just that quick it was over," she said. "Just like that, but you could feel it was like a train going right by the trailer it was shaking. It was insane."

Both are grateful to be OK after the storm.
