LAPEER COUNTY (WJRT) (2/11/2019) - A 28-year-old Sanilac County man died Sunday, 11 days after crashing head-on during whiteout conditions in Lapeer County.

Zachary Lanctot of Carsonville was driving south on VanDyke Road, which is M-53, around 1:30 p.m. when a northbound pickup truck crossed the center line and hit his 2013 Hyundai Elantra near North Branch Road.

Lanctot worked at Croswell-Lexington Community Schools as a long-term substitute teacher and assistant to the athletic director. The district made grief counselors available to staff and students at the high school on Monday.

The Lapeer County Sheriff's Office says a strong west wind was blowing across a farm field along the road where the crash happened. Witnesses reported near whiteout conditions.

Police believe drugs and alcohol did not play a role in the crash. The preliminary investigation points to the weather as the biggest cause of the crash.

Kevin Warnick, 30, was driving the 1995 Chevrolet Silverado that police say crossed the center line. He was being treated for serious injuries after the crash.

The Brown City Fire Department extricated both drivers from their vehicles.
