SANILAC COUNTY (WJRT) (12/18/2017) - A 3-year-old boy is dead after getting trapped inside a house fire near Sandusky early Monday.

The fire was reported around 1:10 a.m. in the 300 block of West Snover Road. The first Sanilac County sheriff's deputies on the scene found the house and a car in the driveway fully engulfed in flames.

Deputies spoke with the boy's 29-year-old father and 25-year-old mother, who had escaped to a neighbor's house with a 1-year-old. They told police the 3-year-old was unaccounted for inside.

The parents relayed to police and members of the Sandusky Fire Department where the boy was last known to be inside. Firefighters entered the burning residence after flames had been knocked down enough and located the boy's body inside a bedroom.

The father and 1-year-old boy were transported to Hurley Medical Center in Flint while the mother was taken to McKenzie Hospital in Sandusky. Their conditions were not released Monday morning.

Authorities were still investigating what caused the fire and whether smoke detectors were functioning properly. The Sanilac County Sheriff's Office Arson Investigation Team, Detective Bureau and the Michigan Fire Marshal's Office all were assisting in the investigation.

A autopsy on the 3-year-old was scheduled for later this week.
