IOSCO COUNTY (WJRT) (10/18/2018) - A 30-year-old woman died in Iosco County after she rear-ended a farm combine Thursday evening.

Allison Mitchell of National City was driving a Chrysler Pacifica west on M-55 near Lorenz Road in Tawas Township around 7:50 p.m. when she hit the farm implement from behind. She died on the scene.

The 44-year-old Tawas City man operating the combine was not injured.

Michigan State Police investigators believe Mitchell may have been texting while driving when the crash happened. They found no skid marks or signs of braking.

Police don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The latest statistics from the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center show that 12,788 crashes in Michigan involved distracted driving in 2016. Those crashes caused 43 fatalities and 5,103 injuries.

“Tragedies such as this are a painful reminder of the importance of safety belts and the need to devote one’s full attention to the road while driving,” said First Lt. David Kaiser, the public information officer for the MSP Third District.
