RICHLAND TOWNSHIP (WJRT)- (08/03/19)- Four people were taken to the hospital after their plane crashed in Saginaw County near the intersection of Spencer and Fordney Rd in Richland Twp.
Saginaw County Sherriff Williams Federspiel said they received the call shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday.
Four people were on board at the time of the crash, all 4 suffering minor injuries.
"A Cessna 185 airplane took off from an airport in the Flint area this morning headed for Beaver Island,” said Federspiel. “There were 4 individuals onboard, 2 men and 2 women in their 60s. As they crossed over the western Saginaw County this morning we received a call from 911 at 10:02 a.m. that a plane had crashed."
The pilot, Peter Mainprize, 62-years-old, suffered minor facial injuries.
Three other passengers on the plane by the names of Pamela Flores, Christopher Flores and Cindi Mainprize received bumps and bruises.
"Apparently the pilot had engine trouble, he was able to get the plane landed on Spencer Rd. but the wing caught a guidewire and flipped the plane on its roof,” said Federspiel. “Thankfully there were no explosions, no fire and no one was seriously injured.”
All four passengers were taken to Hurley Medical Center in Flint for their injuries.
Sheriff Federspiel believes it was the pilot's experience that prevented the situation from having a more gruesome ending.
“I think there's luck involved but I also think that the pilot was an experienced pilot,” said Federspiel. “When I see a crash like that that takes nerves of steel to do that, to be able to find a spot and get it down."
Saginaw County Sheriff's office, Richland Twp firefighters, and the Federal Aviation Administration responded to the scene.
The FAA is on scene investigating.
