5-year-old Flint boy lit clothes on fire, badly burned, Michigan State Police say

FLINT (WJRT) (5/9/2019) - Michigan State Police investigators believe a 5-year-old playing with a lighter last week accidentally lit his clothes on fire.

Lt. Duane Zook said the boy was alone when he started playing with a lighter at a residence in the 2000 block of Arlington Avenue in Flint around 5:15 p.m. on May 1.

Investigators obtained video footage showing him set the fire. Police are still investigating whether the 5-year-old also had some type of accelerent on his clothing that may have contributed to the fire.

The boy, who was not identified, was rushed to the burn unit at Hurley Medical Center with critical injuries.

Michigan State Police also are investigating a separate fire set in the backyard of the boy's residence the same day.
