MANITOWOC, Wis. (WBAY) - (1/7/2019) - Strong winds and waves washed away the South Pier Lighthouse navigational beacon in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on Monday.

The 20-foot tall tower was under control of the Coast Guard, which confirmed that the structure was wiped out during gusty southeast winds.

Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels posted about it on social media.

"We can now add this to our upcoming attractions in our Marine Sanctuary along with the shipwrecks," Nickels wrote.

The mayor's warning: stay off the water Monday. It's very choppy.

StormCenter 2 chief meteorologist Steve Beylon says winds will turn to the west and become blustery again.
