Grand Blanc Community Schools trains staff to 'Stop the Bleed'

GRAND BLANC (WJRT) - (01/10/19) - Grand Blanc Community Schools says dozens of staff members are learning to 'Stop the Bleed.'

The campaign from the the National Security Council trains people for bleeding emergencies.

Organizers say uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma.

The course for Grand Blanc Community Schools staff members includes the proper use of the tourniquet, and how to control bleeding while waiting for first responders.

Program coordinators say the steps are simple are easily remembered as 'A, B, C:'

A: ALERT – Call 911 or have someone call 911
B: BLEEDING – Find the source of the bleeding
C: COMPRESS – Apply direct pressure, apply a tourniquet, or pack the wound and apply pressure

The district says each building at Grand Blanc Schools has a Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) trained to respond to medical emergencies.

It says they conduct regular response drills, and are trained in CPR and AEDs.
