GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) - (7/9/2019) - Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell is shocked that the driver of a 2002 Lincoln walked away with minor injuries after crashing into a tree along M-15 early Tuesday.

The man was driving south on M-15 when he ran off the road and hit the tree near Hills Lane in Atlas Township around 3 a.m. The driver was standing outside the car when police and medical responders arrived.

Pickell said the car sustained "catastrophic damage," but the man was treated and released at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc Township.

Investigators say the driver had used cocaine and marijuana, along with drinking alcohol, before the crash. He is facing charges of driving while intoxicated, not having insurance and have improper license plates on the car.

M-15 was closed for several hours between Kipp Road and Hills Lane while police investigated and cleared the scene. The roadway reopened later Tuesday morning.
