(07/10/17) - "All of a sudden, he grabbed onto my face and he like started like yanking me and shaking me," said seven-year-old Jessica Russell.

Just ahead of the fireworks show, Jessica's mom says someone set one off and the pit bull freaked out and took off running, but Jessica was blocking its path.

"I have never been so scared. I mean, I didn't know what was going to happen," said mom Jennifer Russell.

"The only part that hurted really most was my nose because this side was cut off and it was, so it was hanging down here and it hurt really, really, bad," Jessica said.

Jessica was rushed into surgery at Hurley hospital. Two hours later, she came out with 200 stitches in and around her nose and left cheek.

"She's like, 'When can I go play, when can I go swimming, when can I do this?'" Jennifer said.

For now, the seven-year-old has to stay indoors to prevent an infection. On top of that, her eighth birthday is just weeks away and Jessica decided she no longer wanted to have a party.

"It's because I don't want anyone seeing my face," she said.

Jennifer tells us she won't let that stop the fun.

"So I decided why not do a masquerade ball for her," she said. "So, everyone has to wear a mask and she doesn't have to feel embarrassed. And I ran the idea past her and she loved it. So I think the birthday party is back on."

Jennifer tells us they've been around the dog several times before and never had a problem.

The owner has asked to stay anonymous.

Jessica's family did notify police of the attack.
