FLINT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (08/08/17) - A random act of kindness: A Mid-Michigan man goes above and beyond - buying a little girl a backpack in the checkout line of a store over the weekend.
This isn't the man's first time doing such a gesture.
Lamar Brown is a volunteer with Dye Elementary School and was just going about his day shopping at the Forman Mills off Miller Road in Flint Township.
"I looked up and I saw this young lady. She was looking at backpacks. And I saw her with two other ladies and she turned around and said to me, the grandma, 'Are you going to buy a backpack,' jokingly," he said.
He bought the backpack for the little girl. The picture has gone viral on Facebook with well over 1,500 likes.
"I never expected any of this to happen, personally. It's an eye-opening experience for me to say the least," he said.
This isn't Brown's first time doing such an act.
"I do a back to school backpack giveaway for the last four years. I provide 100 book bags for girls and 100 for boys," he said.
These acts of kindness are something he says comes from within.
"As a child, I didn't have much. I relied on Old Newsboys and things of that nature to have the necessary tools for me to go to school," he said.
Brown uses his very own childhood experience to make sure other kids don't have to do the same.
"Things are getting expensive. If I can be that person to give that to them, then I'm successful in doing so," he said.
The little girl met up with Brown on Monday to thank him for the kind gesture.
"He's really nice. I gave him a card because I love him. He paid for my backpack," she said.
