You currently know her as the fiery and feisty Ruby Johnson from ABC's hit show Blackish.
Jenifer Lewis has a career that spans decades, and has tackled every corner of showbiz from the big screen to Broadway.
With the release of her book, "The Mother of Black Hollywood", author can now be added to the list.
In the book, she talks about her rise from poverty to fame. She also chronicles events that have happened in her life along the way. Lewis talks about being molested by her pastor, abortion, and losing many friends at the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis.
Lewis also puts the spotlight on mental health. She talks about living with bipolar disorder, which went undiagnosed until she was 33 years old. She had a breakdown on set, while filming "The Temptations."
The Mayo Clinic defines bipolar disorder as a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs and lows.
Through therapy, Lewis also learned that she had a sex addiction. She found that she was using sex to self medicate, and escape the pain that lied beneath.
Mental illness is a topic that is generally not talked about, but she is using her platform to breakdown the stereotypes, and so that anyone can live a happy and fulfilled life.
