ABC12 awarded prestigious national honor for the Diaper Drive

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WJRT) - (06/12/18) - ABC12 is now the proud recipient of a national award highlighting the station's dedication to serving the mid-Michigan community through the annual Diaper Drive.

The National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation awarded WJRT a 2018 Celebration of Service to America Award in Washington, D.C. Tuesday evening.

The award recognizes outstanding community service by local broadcasters.

In Genesee County, 4,500 children under age 3 live below the poverty line. Because state and federal assistance cannot be used to buy diapers, many of these children are forced to stay in the same diaper for days at a time.

The day-long Diaper Drive collects donations of diapers, wipes and cash to help the Flint Diaper Bank supply more than 1 million diapers to local babies every year.

ABC12's Angie Hendershot accepted the award alongside news director Jayne Hodak.

The Service to America award was presented by Flint Representative Dan Kildee. WJRT general manager Pete Veto was also in attendance.

Angie helped launch the Diaper Drive 10 years ago and later co-founded the non-profit Flint Diaper Bank.
