SAGINAW (WJRT) (12/19/2017) - The Freeland man accused of soliciting sexually explicit photos of young girls on Instagram allegedly told police it was all part of a ploy.
Jason Schultz, 37, is accused of posing a 12-year-old boy under three screen names on the photo sharing website and private messaging young girls to ask for explicit photos.
A Saginaw County judge heard testimony in the case during a preliminary hearing on Tuesday. At the end, the judge decided there is enough evidence to send Schultz's case to trial.
Schultz, who is a physicians assistant attending medical school, told investigators from the Tittabawassee Township Police Department that he started the ploy to show his own daughter how gullible young girls can be.
His daughter apparently had sent a photo of herself to someone on the internet and Schultz wanted to teach her a lesson, according to testimony on Tuesday.
Police believe Schultz may have interacted with up to 50 girls in the Freeland and Swan Valley school districts, but so far he is only facing charges involving one victim -- his fiance's daughter.
Schultz is charged with accosting a minor for immoral purposes and using a computer to commit a crime. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
