BAY CITY (WJRT) - (03/12/19) - Just in time for the Tall Ships Celebration this July one of Bay City's two educational vessels is getting a major makeover.
The Appledore V is undergoing nearly $80,000 in updates and repairs.
"The hull has been repaired, any damage that was done because of salt water and rusting, all of those pieces have been fixed and welded back together," said BaySail Director of Marketing Scott Ellis.
"It's just time for things that have worn out to be replaced, and we're also redoing the plumbing and the electrical and just getting her in really great condition," added BaySail Board Treasurer Wanda Dziwura.
While the ship calls Bay City home, she did spend a few years in Florida where she was exposed to salt water.
And while a lot of the work is being done by volunteers, BaySail still needs community support to finish the project.
After support from the Herbert H. and Grace A Dow Foundation, Smith Family Foundation, and a third foundation, $20,000 remains.
Getting her in tip top shape will allow her to be ready for the Tall Ships Celebration in July, as well as continue her mission to education community members through various programs.
"Our big program is 'Science Under Sail' for third through 12th graders, we do that in the spring and in the fall," Ellis said.
A crowdfunding campaign has been set up on Patronicity to help collect the final amount. Click on the 'Related Link' with this story to go directly to the fundraiser.
The fundraiser ends May 6.
