MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) (3/5/2020) - The Better Business Bureau is alerting consumers to a "ghost" tax preparers.

That's when someone who is not certified files someone's tax return. They'll do all the paperwork and math but won't sign the return.

Those tax returns are considered self-filed and if there's something is wrong with the forms, the person who files the taxes is left on the hook for any errors, not the preparer.

By law, if someone prepares federal tax returns they have to provide a valid identification number.
