GENESEE TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (11/5/2019) - A driver and a fisherman died after a car crashed into Mott Lake from Genesee Road.
A fisherman and a driver died after a car crashed into Mott Lake near the Genesee Road bridge.
The accident was reported around 6:50 p.m. near the bridge between the two legs of Stanley Road north and south of the lake.
Witnesses at the scene say the car was driving erratically when it crashed into the water. The car hit a fisherman, who died at the scene, and the car driver also died.
"It went off right just before the bridge there, and you know it went off on an angle, and you know it's one of those peculiar things where you have no control over and some poor guy that's fishing gets hit by a car," said Genesee Township Police Chief John Mulally.
Adding to the already catastrophic situation, the car landed on a cage protecting a 16-inch water main running along the bridge. It had to be shut down for fear it would explode.
The water shutoff is affecting thousands of people in the area. Anyone without water may have to wait several hours before it can be turned back on.
