FLINT (WJRT) - (03/27/19) - Some of the most gifted young musicians around are gearing up for a national competition.
The Boys and Girls Club of Flint's Steel Drum Band is preparing for its second national competition in Chicago this weekend at the Worldstrides Heritage Festival.
They previously performed in New York and outscored the rest.
Wednesday night they gave a preview of what they'll be performing in Chicago, including music by Andy Narell and Bruno Mars, among others.
Band Director Jim Coviak says the members are ages 11 to 17.
"I have a really talented group of kids but some of the rhythms that they're playing are really complicated and they're doing a really good job of being able to play different rhythms together at the same time," Coviak said.
"We all get together. We all connect. We all vibe, and then when we get together and play, it's all magic," said band member Eboni Taylor.
The 12-member group leaves for Chicago this weekend.
They do about 20 shows a year, and this year they will mark performance number 100.

The band will also enjoy a Lake Michigan dinner cruise and experience the hit musical “Hamilton.”
