Bridgeport man dies after crashing car, which burst into flames
(7/31/2018) - A 60-year-old Bridgeport man died Monday evening in what police are calling a suspicious incident in Saginaw County.
His SUV crashed into a tree at the dead end of Lions Head Lane north of Tathan Road in Bridgeport Township around 9:30 p.m. Then, the vehicle started on fire.
Neighbors believe the victim, who has not been identified, was either attempting to pull out of or pull into the driveway at his home on Lions Head Lane and for some reason slammed into the trees.
Witnesses say the fire was raging.
"I was standing in my kitchen and I heard a boom," said Don Geitman, who lives just behind the man's home. "And then I seen a big ball of flames. I looked out, then I heard some yelling, 'Oh my God, oh my God."
That hollering was from neighbors who came out to try and help the man inside.
"So I come to the backyard, looked around and noticed a vehicle up against the tree, and it started getting hot, so I backed off," Geitman said.
It appears the fire was too hot for anyone to get the man out of the SUV.
"Then there were several booms after that," Geitman said.
Police and fire crews arrived minutes later, but the man died. A cause of death is not known yet, nor is it clear why his vehicle went out of control and hit the tree.
Neighbors added the tires on the SUV were spinning as the fire started and spread to the trees. It's possible the vehicle was stuck between two trees.
Geitman hadn't seen his neighbor in awhile and thought he had moved from the home a short time ago.
"I went to school with him before," he said.
Police are not releasing any other information about the victim until an autopsy is done.
