(10/15/2018) - The Buena Vista Township Police Department’s K-9, Maverick, has new body armor from a national organization.

Maverick got a bullet and stab protective vest from the nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s Inc. Friends and family of Peter Coscarelli from Lansing sponsored the cost of the vest. They donated the vest in Coscarelli's memory.

Vested Interest in K9s Inc. is based in East Taunton, Mass. The organization provides bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to law enforcement dogs throughout the United States.

The nonprofit has provided 3,100 protective vests for law enforcement dogs in all 50 states since 2009 and raised more than $5 million. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K-9s working in the U.S.

The vest cost $950. The retail cost of each vest is about $1,700 to $2,300 with a five-year warranty.
