BRIDGEPORT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (2/18/2019) - Candlelite Bowling and Banquet Center is the place where many people have had weddings, proms and have bowled a game or two.
The Bridgeport Township business will be closing its doors later this year.
"I've been here my whole life and Candlelite has been there my whole life," said Bridgeport Township Manager Rose Licht.
But the Candelite Bowling and Banquet Center on Dixie Highway in Bridgeport Township will be closing its doors. Owner Bob Klein confirmed it will be closing in July but did not want to discuss the matter.
The Candelite has been a fixture in the Bridgeport area with its location just east of I-75. Licht is not sure why the business is closing.
"It is a big loss to our community," she said. "It's sad to see it go. It's been there since the early '60s when it was built."
Bridgeport High School Athletic Director Gabe Rodriguez remembers going to the Candlelite when he was younger. Now he's concerned about how the business closing will affect local school bowling teams.
"It's going to put a damper transportation for our students and future bowlers here in Bridgeport," Rodriguez said.
He said Frankenmuth and Birch Run high schools also use Candelite for their bowling programs.
"Our options are to look at the Saginaw area, probably looking at Stardust or Lefevre's," Rodriguez said.
But the other schools will have to look as well, which could mean practice time at the remaining Saginaw County bowling businesses could be tight. Licht is hoping that if Candlelite closes in July, it won't stay closed for long.
"That would be wonderful news if somebody could come along and purchase that building, but I have not heard anything," she said.
