UPDATE: Charges filed after deadly road rage crash in Gratiot County

GRATIOT COUNTY (WJRT) - (11/13/2017) - A 24-year-old Alma man faces second degree murder and other charges in a road rage case.

Kyle Richards faces life in prison after investigators say he caused the death of 22-year-old Austin Gibson.

Gibson was driving his friend's car early Friday morning down Rich Road near Tyler Road in Gratiot County's Sumner Township.

Police say Richards got into his car and was chasing the car being driven by Gibson after a disagreement at a party.

Investigators believe Richards car rammed the car Gibson was driving from behind, causing it to go into a ditch and the car hit a tree.

Gibson was killed, but his friend survived.

Richards is being held on a one hundred thousand, ten percent bond.


(11/10/2017) - Police say a crash Friday morning that resulted in the death of a 22-year-old Gratiot County man was a result of road rage.

A 24-year-old man from Alma was charged with murder in connection with the case.

The Gratiot County Sheriff's Office responded to the area of Tyler and Rich roads in Sumner Township after callers reported a car had crashed into a ditch and a tree.

The 22-year-old Elm Hall man driving the car was pronounced dead on the scene while the passenger was seriously injured and transported to an area hospital.

The passenger was able to give police a statement, indicating the car had crashed after another car rammed it from behind.

The incident stemmed from a party the two had attended Thursday night. They were kicked out and ordered to leave, but the other car chased them from the area before the crash.

The suspect from Alma, who was not identified, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and leaving the scene of an accident. Police believe he will be arraigned on Monday.
