Commercial fire in Flint late Monday possibly related to marijuana grow operation

FLINT (WJRT) (2/20/2018) - Authorities believe a fire that damaged a mostly vacant building in Flint on Monday evening possibly was related to a marijuana grow operation.

The Flint Fire Department responded to the 1800 block of Lewis Place around 9:45 p.m. Most of the fire was in the basement of the structure, which is near the Davison Road underpass at I-475.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and searched the building for any occupants, but found it was not occupied.

Fire investigators believe wiring in the building had been tampered with previously, which possibly sparked the fire. The wiring was consistent with a marijuana growing operation.

Neighbors reported seeing Michigan State Police troopers raid the building recently.

That's near Davison Road just before it goes under the I-475 overpass.

Firefighters at the scene tell ABC12 they believe the building hasn't been used for some time, but as of late Monday, they wouldn't be 100-percent certain.

No one was inside at the time.

The cause remains under investigation.
