Consumers Energy admits to double billing 5,000 customers, now fixing error

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) (1/16/2018) - Consumers Energy customers signed up for auto-pay should check their bank accounts after the utility company admitted to billing some customers twice on Tuesday.

Debbie Plumb noticed she had two identical charges taken from her account at 4 a.m. Tuesday from Consumers, which overdrew her checking account.

Consumers spokeswoman Debra Dodd confirmed the same issue happened with about 5,000 other customers.

The company was confident the double charges would be voided by midnight, which would put the money from the overcharge back into customers' checking accounts.

"We sincerely apologize for this error and are working to ensure it does not happen again," Dodd said.

Plumb said she had not received her money back by 2 p.m. She encouraged other customers to check their accounts to see if they got charged twice.
