CORUNNA (WJRT) (2/8/2019) - A Corunna man facing charges in the death of a 1-year-old who drowned in a bathtub last year will be going to prison.

Justin Councilor, 32, was sentenced Friday morning in Shiawassee County 35th Circuit Court to three to 10 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.

Councilor was charged in August in connection with the death of 13-month-old Makalia, the daughter of his girlfriend at the time. Police said that March 20, 2018, while the child's mother was asleep, Councilor put Makalia in a bathtub, turned on the water and left the room.

Detectives said Councilor was cooking a meal at the time with family and friends when he lost track of time. He was out of the room for around 10 minutes, with the water running for the duration of the time.

Police said that when Councilor remembered Makalia was in the bathroom, it was too late and the 13-month-old had drowned.
