Crime ridden Flint mobile home park will soon be demolished

FLINT (WJRT) (04/29/19) -- Many call the Shady Acres mobile home park an eyesore and a breeding ground for criminal activity on Flint's east side.

Others say it's been the target of vandalism, illegal dumping and most recently, arson over the weekend. But not for long.

"It looks like they're going to take most of the trailers out of here, anything that's above ground. Cleaning that up is going to make a big difference for our neighborhood," said Annette Reynolds, who lives nearby.

She's talking about the Genesee County Land Bank and their efforts to demolish the park -- something Reynolds has been very active in advocating for.

"We haven't really backed down. Once I created my Facebook page, now we have meetings once a month and we have the Land Bank there, so we've been voicing our concerns with the Land Bank, with the blight," she said.

Shady Acres has been owned by the Land Bank since 2015, and ever since then nothing good has come out of the 196-lot site.

"There's still been several fires. There's more graffiti, more dumping, so I think once they get it all cleaned up and they can block it off, it'll keep people out of here," Reynolds said.

Reynolds, who has held a number of cleanups at the park this last year, is just happy to see that her hard work, along with others', is going to pay off.

"I just wish that it would have happened a little bit sooner," she said. "I'd like to see it go a little faster. We can't see much improvement right now, but it takes baby steps and I think these baby steps will make a big difference."

It's not known if there's going to be a full or partial cleanup. The Genesee County Land Bank says the project is currently out for bidding.

Demolition is expected to take place this summer.
