LAPEER COUNTY (WJRT) - (5/13/19) - Deputies say a man is dead and another is in serious condition after a head-on crash in Lapeer County.

It happened near Imlay City early Saturday on Van Dyke Road near Bowers Road.

The Lapeer County Sheriff's Office says a 41-year-old minivan driver heading north on Van Dyke Road didn't properly navigate a curve in the road and crossed the center line.

When he overcorrected, investigators say his van sideswiped a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze. That 24-year-old driver wasn't hurt.

Deputies say the minivan continued north in the southbound lane and hit a 2008 Saturn Aura head-on. According to investigators, 48-year-old Gary Fransel of Sandusky was driving the Saturn and died at the scene.

The sheriff's office says the 41-year-old van driver remains in the hospital.

Police don't believe excessive speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
