Durand Railroad Days festival kicks off Thursday morning

Durand Railroad Days got off to an early start Thursday morning.

DURAND (WJRT) (5/16/2019) - Children in Durand got a fun start to their day on Thursday morning.

Before heading to school, they were able to eat fresh doughnuts and hop on a few carnival rides, as the Durand Railroad Days festival officially got under way.

"Of all the carnivals I've ever seen, I think this is the most spectacular that you can get into a small community,” said Kent Edwards, the president of Railroad Days.

There are a ton of events this weekend. People can expect to see a parade, comedy show, movie night and contests.

"It's fun to bring your family, there's a lot to see and do,” said Laura Sorensen, the vice president of marketing with PFCU Credit Union.

The fun is just half of the meaning behind Railroad Days. It’s also a way to start a conversation about the rich history of railroads in Durand, where trains have been blowing whistles since 1856.

"This is a railroad community, there's a lot of folks here that work for the railroad and the whole community was built around the railroad,” Edwards said.

Parents show their love for the history by bringing their little ones every year.

It takes a lot of work to prep for Railroad Days. The people who do it are all volunteers and sponsors.

"Those people are all kind and very generous to put Railroad Days on,” Edwards said.
