FLINT (WJRT) (3/7/2019) - In the heart of downtown Flint, Elga Credit Union is opening a new branch Friday at Saginaw and Second streets.
"Seventeen years and four attempts and we're finally here," said CEO Karen Church. "We love being in the middle of all the economic boom going on downtown.”
The credit union has multiple branches in Saginaw, Genesee and Lapeer counties. However, Church said a branch in downtown Flint is what they needed from the start.
"Elga Credit Union has thousands of members in this general area within the three mile radius," Church said. "We've been wanting to get down here and serve them in a closer location."
Elga is expecting a huge member increase thanks to the new downtown branch.
"We certainly would welcome any new members,” Church said. "We believe there's a lot of people who don't have credit unions."
Elga Vice President Terry Katzur said the new branch comes at a great time for the downtown area, which is drawing new investment and more consumers.
"A lot of people coming to the downtown area -- more than ever with the new restaurants and all the new businesses, and we believe that's going to provide a lot of traffic for this branch,” Katzur said.
He said there’s a shortage of ATMs in the area, so the new branch will give customers what they need.
"We have two ATMs. One is outside right onto the sidewalk and it's available 24 hours. We also have one inside that's available 24 hours, as well, so whether you are a member or not you can come down here and use the ATM,” Katzur said.
The grand opening is Friday with a light breakfast served at 8:30 a.m. and the ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. The public is invited.
