FLINT (WJRT) - (03/29/19) - City of Champions. Flint has such a rich history when it comes to boxing. And presently, the city is well represented, too.
Now we're getting our first look inside a new training facility at Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village brought to you by a world class boxing champion.
ABC12 talked to boxing champion Tracy Byrd about creating a legacy for her legendary father Joe and late mother Rose.
"The thrill of victory, truly. The honor and the privilege to be a child of Joe and Rose Byrd, and to know that my dad can come in here and be a part of the Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village and helping the youth because that's what he's always stood for," Byrd said.
The Joe and Rose Byrd After School All Stars program is officially ready to welcome your child.
Children will participate in non-contact boxing, and learn the importance of fitness and healthy eating.
For those looking to take their talents to the next level, the team has partnered with Berston Field House to make it happen.
Everlast has sponsored the equipment.
Members of the Byrd family will be heavily involved.
Childhood friends basketball great Linnell Jones-McKenney with SBEV and Tracy Byrd had this in the works for about a year.
"I get a phone call and they say we would like to be able to honor our parents, leave a legacy and open up an opportunity for the youth in our community to be able to take part and learn discipline and learn how to set goals and learn how to be a champion. This is like a dream come true in my lifetime," said Coach Linnell Jones-McKenney.
Ages 8 to 14 are welcome to train there for free. They'll do so every Monday with Patrick Byrd for 10 weeks. You can learn more here. You can also email firstname.lastname@example.org.
