Fisherman drowns while attempting to land boat on Gladwin County lake

GLADWIN COUNTY (WJRT) (5/10/2018) - A Gladwin County fisherman drowned after falling into Lake Lancer on Thursday, apparently while preparing to land his boat.

Neighbors on the lake called 911 after spotting a 14-foot aluminum fishing boat adrift in the middle of the lake with nobody on board around 3 p.m.

Nearly an hour later, deputies from the Gladwin County Sheriff's Office discovered a pickup truck towing a boat trailer backed into a boat ramp off Dutcher Road and still running.

The truck and boat both were registered to 65-year-old Roy Bruner of Gladwin. Police couldn't find any trace of him at the boat ramp.

Firefighters and a dive team responded to continue the search. Several neighbors around the lake offered the boats for rescue workers to use during the search.

Around 6 p.m., authorities recovered Bruner's body from the lake offshore from Dunbar Court, which is across the lake from the boat ramp.

Police believe he was preparing to land his boat after a fishing trip when he fell into the water. Investigators are still determining whether Bruner fell in by accident or suffered a medical issue that caused him to fall in.

An autopsy is planned to determine Bruner's cause of death.
