FLINT (WJRT) (10/9/2017) - The Flint Fire Department kicked off National Fire Prevention Week by recognizing their own.
Fire Chief Ray Barton and Mayor Karen Weaver hosted Firefighter Appreciation Day at Fire Station 1 Monday afternoon. Firefighters were recognized with awards for service and Barton treated everyone to lunch.
Barton said the department's staffing levels have been built back up to close to national standards of one firefighter per 1,000 residents.
"Firefighters have been so much help, going over and above, doing things for me like getting Station 8 back up," Barton said. "They changed ceiling tiles, they're painting up at the station -- a lot of different things that normally the city maintenance would handle -- going out to community events, installing smoke detectors even on their days off."
The fire department will also spend time this week educating children about fire safety.
