Flint gears up for Tuesday's Back to the Bricks kick off
(08/13/2018) - One of the most beloved car events in the U.S., Back to the Bricks kicks off Tuesday.
It’s an exciting time here in Flint, as it get ready to welcome hundreds of thousands of people to the area for an event tailor made for the Vehicle City.
"If it wasn't for the car owners and the spectators coming out and enjoying themselves and remembering and reminiscing about their first car, we wouldn't have a show," said Al Hatch, founder of Back to the Bricks.
What started off as a one day event with a few hundred vehicles has grown into one of the most highly anticipated car shows of the summer, bringing in folks from all across the country. Back to the Bricks has become a must see event in the Vehicle City.
"Officials say 500-600 thousand people," said Hatch. "If you look at some of the footage from the media, ABC 12 and they show a shot of Saginaw Street and it looks like a river of humanity."
Chairman Al Hatch has been there right from the start of Back to Bricks, now in its 14th year.
"When we first started this downtown Flint was probably known as plywood city,” said Hatch. “Many, many vacant store fronts and it started off as a one day event."
Now a week-long event, from the Rolling Cruise to the Buick Party, there's something for everyone.
"We consider our second week in August our main event week and the entire week is just filled multitude of different venues that the public can come out to and which I might add, all of them are free.">
The first event Tuesday will be a free drive in movie at the US23 Drive-in Theater, with a showing of the movie Tucker. The show starts at 5 p.m.
