GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) - (04/04/17) - The Genesee County Community Action Resource Department is helping to make sure children have something to eat while not in school.
“Meet Up to Eat Up”, a GCCARD summer feeding program, is looking to double its output after receiving an $811,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Education.
That means more than 100,000 nutritious meals will be available this summer for local children, many who are living through a water crisis.
"We have never experienced anything like this before so a lot of the programming and opportunities that are being made available is really in direct response to the fact that we are a community going through a crisis,” said Matt Purcell, executive director for GCCARD.
Leaders hope to expand in the future to a year-round, after-school program.
