Gas leak closes businesses along Linden Road construction zone ... again

FLINT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (11/29/2017) - A portion of Linden Road under construction in Flint Township is back open after a natural gas leak -- at least the third since last summer.

Several businesses along Linden Road between Corunna and Lennon roads had to be evacuated after contractors working on a road construction project hit a gas main around 11:30 a.m.

Medical offices in the area had to interrupt treatments for patients to get everyone to safety.

"We've been in the process, first and foremost, securing the area for the safety of people," Flint Township Fire Chief Tom Stadler said at the scene. "We've been evacuating numerous businesses here that have natural gas smell either in the building or near the building."

The road closure exacerbated traffic issues in the area caused by the ongoing road reconstruction project.

Consumers Energy shut off the gas leak around 2 p.m., but some businesses in the area still didn't have gas service in the late afternoon.

Wednesday's gas leak was at least the third reported along the same stretch of road since August.
