OAKLAND COUNTY (WJRT) (11/13/2019) - A 13-year-old girl died and a 13-year-old boy was injured after a snowmobile crash in Oakland County on Tuesday evening.

The boy was operating the 2004 Polaris 550 snowmobile northbound on Eston Road in Independence Township behind his 55-year-old father, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

The father slowed to a stop, but his son didn't notice and rear-ended his father's snowmobile. The collision caused the girl to get thrown off their snowmobile.

Bystanders were performing CPR on her when emergency crews arrived, police say. She was not breathing, but paramedics detected a pulse.

Ambulances transported both 13-year-olds to St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital, where the girl died and the boy was listed in stable condition Wednesday. The boy's father was not injured.

Police say everyone involved in the crash was wearing a helmet.

Counselors were available at Lake Orion schools for the girl's classmates. Resource officers from the sheriff's office were collaborating with administrators and counselors notifying students about the crash.
