MUNDY TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (3/14/2018) - The first day of a total closure on busy Grand Blanc Road is causing headaches and longer drives for motorists through Mundy Township.
Grand Blanc Road is closed indefinitely over Swartz Creek in Mundy Township.
The Genesee County Road Commission closed the Grand Blanc Road bridge over Swartz Creek just east of U.S. 23. A recent inspection revealed issues with the support structure underneath requiring immediate repairs.
Motorists in the area said they are unhappy about the closure and the lack of signage on the east side of the bridge at Fenton Road. Several vehicles drove right up to the bridge and had to turn around.
Joleen Manley said the detour is adding about 10 minutes each way to her trips to and from Grand Blanc.
"It is a huge massive pain in the butt," she said. "I mean seriously, it's Grand Blanc Road. Like, I go back and forth this way probably four or five times a day to come into Grand Blanc."
The road commission closed one lane of the bridge last week, requiring westbound drivers to detour on Fenton, Hill and Torrey roads. But instead of taking the detour, many westbound drivers drove around the barricades into the eastbound lane.
That led the road commission to close the bridge completely due to the safety issue.
The closure will remain in place indefinitely. The road commission is exploring options for repairing the bridge, but there is no timetable for when the project will begin.
