(4/8/2019) - Barrels have been added to I-75 in Bay County for a $30 million project working on the road and revamping 11 bridges along the way.

It won't be ideal for many people heading northbound during the summer months, because I-75 will have lane closures between North Union and Beaver roads.

"You can expect crews out there. There will be full access to I-75 this week and the summer, except for a nighttime detour next week," said MDOT Bay Region Transportation Center manager Jack Hofweber.

While motorists will still be able to access I-75 throughout the project, traffic will be maintained with lane closures, traffic shifts and a moving barrier wall that will accommodate the additional driving that happens during the summer months.

"The movable barrier wall will allow two lanes on northbound on Fridays and then switch on Saturday to allow two lanes during the summer time," Hofweber said.

In addition to I-75, there are currently a few bridges closed.

Mackinaw and Chip roads are the main bridges being demolished. Once those are both rebuilt they will then move on to Wilder Road. That closure will be announced before work starts.

Now with more projects, that means more workers on the roadways. This is the start to Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, so drivers should proceed with caution when barrels are out.
