FLINT (WJRT) (12/3/2017) - The International Academy of Flint director resigned days after a gas leak caused an evacuation at the school and two days of canceled classes.
Reginald Kirkland stepped down from the top administrative position at the school on Nov. 17, according to a letter sent home to parents. A three-day gas leak happened earlier that week.
International Academy's former director and current regional director both will step in to lead the school until a permanent replacement is hired.
The school was evacuated on Nov. 13 after students and staff complained of smelling a suspicious odor. Classes resumed that day after a couple hours, but were canceled the next two days to investigate.
Consumers Energy sent specialized equipment to detect the source of the odor, which later was pinpointed to a natural gas valve being left partially open in a science classroom.
