Jaden Smith's "Water Box" makes debut with Flint residents
(03/07/19) - Today marks the first day the new "Water Box" is pumping out clean water to Flint residents at First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church.
Since 2014, the church has distributed over 5 million water bottles to residents, but as time passes, donations are declining.
"It was a community that people were talking about and donating and everybody was paying attention, and then slowly that started to kind of dwindle and dwindle away, but the problems didn't go away," Jaden Smith said. Smith is the son of Hollywood-actor, Will Smith.
"The Water Box" goes through multiple filters to remove any minerals, lead, or other contaminants from the water. Today, the City of Flint residents got a chance to taste the future of water.
"That's just awesome. It just blows me away because we just got used to no clean water anymore. You used to go to the faucet and just stick your head under and just drink from the faucet as kids. You can't do that anymore," Nikitah Fisher, Flint resident, said.
Earlier today, the church had a team of volunteers filling up 5-gallon jugs for residents. The church's First Lady, Catrina Tillman, insisted on being outside.
"Since we unveiled this to the community, transparency is key, and so we wanted them to see us actually filling up their water jugs. As you can see, we have a couple free, 5-gallon water jugs that we're giving out to the community, and so we wanted them to see how this water box works, as well if they want to see the inside of it," Tillman said.
The next giveaway will be next Thursday, March 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 pm. Water jugs are limited, so you are encouraged to bring one if you already have one.
Bottled water distribution will continue from Tuesday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon, while supplies last.
