KFC in Flint catches fire after crashed vehicle lands inside
(12/30/2019) - A KFC restaurant in Flint caught fire Monday evening after a crash sent a vehicle careening inside.
Heavy smoke and flames were seen in the restaurant at Dort Highway and Lapeer Road after the incident was reported around 7:05 p.m.
Flint Fire Department Battalion Chief Ramsey Clapper said they received a call about a three-car crash, but en route it was upgraded to a car fire inside the building and possible double entrapment.
"Once we got the fire knocked down, we got a primary search of the vehicle and the surrounding area and didn't find anybody," said Clapper. "We had a couple of issues with the A/C unit sagging pretty good and then we had to block off Dort Highway for a hydrant. So we had a couple of issues there, but it's all under control."
Police closed Dort Highway in both directions between Lapeer Road and I-69. The Chevy Equinox involved hit a pole at the corner of Dort and Lapeer, knocking out the power at the traffic signal.
"This building actually caught on fire a couple of years ago. This is the second fire that we've had here, I think, in a five-year span," said Clapper. "I'm sure they can rebuild it but it's a significant damage within the structure."
All lanes of traffic in the area reopened Monday evening and the incident remains under investigation.
