FLINT (WJRT) - (12/8/2019) - A mid-Michigan high school band is marching its way to a national competition. However, there is still work left to be done to make their dream a reality. The Kearsley High School band has never competed in a competition. They say it's an opportunity of a lifetime. The competition is in Orlando, Florida in April.
"It's a really exciting opportunity for us to go to this competition, other groups have gone to this competition before, but we've never done it," Madison Burroughs said. She is a band member.
The band members are excited, but they are struggling to pay for the entire trip.
"We're trying to raise the money to help us pay for it because our trip for each person it's over $1,000 to go, we have a lot of band kids that's going to it, we just cant afford all the money in the short amount of time," Megan Little said.
In the midst of collecting money, the team is also trying to practice and prepare.
"It's going to take a lot of time, especially mentally, but I think we would be able to do well," Daniel Fitzgerald said.
Even if the band doesn't win, they said they are grateful for the opportunity.
The fundraiser will be held on Sunday Dec 9th in the cafeteria at Kearsley High School. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm. Anyone can purchase a ticket for $15. Each person will receive a full meal and a dessert. The jazz section of the band will perform for visitors.
