Kick off the new year with Crim Fitness

(1/2/2019) - The Crim Festival of Races may be months away, but now's the time to begin training.

"We're getting into that time of the year where potentially the winter blues can set in, and it is so important to set a goal for yourself that's down the road," said Crim Fitness Foundation Director Andy Younger.

If your goal is to run the Crim, the biggest race in mid-Michigan, now is the time to get started.

"It's about nine months away and believe it or not, it's not too late to start. It's actually the most important time to set that goal and make that commitment," Younger said.

If you're a bit weary about getting started on your own, don't worry, because there is a program to help you every step of the way.

"We have groups for the 5K, 5 mile, and big 10 mile race," said Assistant Director Joe Dimambro. "Running and walking groups of all paces. You'll meet with a group once a week from May through August, for 15 weeks. Train with people with the same goals, the same speeds, get ready for your rim race, and have a fun summer and a good time doing it."

While the Crim training program does focus on helping each person achieve their goals, along the way many people create new friendships as well.

"It is so much more fun to get ready for your race when you're surrounded by people and you have support, and honestly you can have fun before and after with that same group of people," says Younger. "People really get to know each other and become really good friends."
